Weekly Update:
So much has happened in the past few weeks at Willett! We have been so busy! We had our local fire department come to visit our school and share how to stay safe in the event of a fire, as well as, preventative measures we can all take to ensure the safety of our loved ones. Checking our fire alarms, planning an escape route and backup, as well as a place to meet outside of our home, were all great ways to be proactive and help us to remain safe in the event of a fire. We also had an amazing speaker from our local community Y. M. C. A. Mrs. Tetreault helped us to learn all about the colors of the rainbow and how to "eat a rainbow"! :) Each color represents a food group and the nutrition that our bodies need to be healthy! The connections that she shared were awesome and the children (as well as myself) enjoyed the movement and exercise portion of her game that made us "straight like celery" or "round like a pumpkin". We also loved being the farmer who picked the apples and carrots while he washed the lettuce. Ask your child to show you the movements connected to each one. It was a great activity to make us move and practice our balance while learning all about all the nutritional connections to the vegetables and fruit that we grow in our Willett Garden each year!
This year we grew sunflowers, broccoli, tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, green beans, eggplant, lettuce, onions, sugar snap peas, winter squash, sugar pumpkins, corn, blackberries, and potatoes, just to name a few. WE are proud to say each color of the rainbow was represented with potatoes being the white cloud. ;)
This week we will be finishing the last story in UNIT 1! It is an informative piece that is all about the wild animals living on African conservation land and how everyday choices we make can create an impact on the lives of wild animals where we live. Once we complete this week, we will be taking a 2 week break from Reading Street to work on a CEPA writing activity that relates to opinion writing. and then a reasearch project on a wild animal and the habitats that they live in. This is the first big writng project that we will be working on within our classroom that will end with a special project/commercial that will be videotaped and shared with our peers. The children will pretend that they are working for the local ZOO and create a commercial that draws people to their new attraction for the animal of their choice. :) I can't wait to get started!

Weekly Update: October 2nd, 2017
I hope everyone had a great weekend! We had some beautiful Fall weather this Sunday! :)
This week we will be STARTING HOMEWORK! Every student will come home with a homework packet in their home to school folder on Monday and will need to return it on Friday of this week.
READING STREET: This week we will be working to develop a better understanding of what we can do to learn more about wild animals through observation. The nonfictional piece we will be reading is "The Fox and a Kit." This book is all about a mother fox, that is being observed in a zoo, and how she teaches her kit the necessary and important skills to survive and thrive as an adult. We will be taking a quick walk through our "own" wild woods here at Willett at the end of the week to see if we can observe and learn more about wild animals in their own natural habitat. :)
MATH: We have finished Unit 1 and our assessment. This week we will be starting Unit 2 in Everyday Math and will be focusing on the use of a strategy wall to solve number stories, decomposing numbers within sets of 10, understanding "turn arounds" (If 7 + 6 = 13 then 6 + 7 = 13 )and determining strategies for accurate counts of large sets of objects.
Important Upcoming Dates:
October 5th = Back to School BBQ
October 6th = Half Day Professional Development Day/ Early Release 12:25
October 9th = Columbus Day/ NO SCHOOL
Weekly Update: September 25th, 2017
Dear Families,
We have had a very busy start to our "Fantastic First Grade" year! In addition to learning all about our outdoor classroom we call the Willett Garden, we have be learning about animals, both tame and wild, and how we can work together to mutually help one another! This week our focus is about an Ox and how he is able to help his owners named Mom and Pop. It is a fictitious story about a silly Ox. However we are able to also discuss informative text that shares how farmers of the past relied on the animals to do many of the chores on a farm before the industrial age that brought about machinery to expedite the process and allow us to produce more food for the increasing demand.
Math: We have been learning all about: *use of a number line/number grid *counting strategies *interpreting data with the use of tally marks and *solving number stories with strategies.
Important Upcoming Dates: September 26th (Tuesday) = Back to School Night 6 - 8
